The year 2025 marks a turning point for European legislation on food contact materials. The long-awaited Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) has finally been published, setting the stage for a radical transformation of the packaging sector. This new framework introduces ambitious requirements on recyclability, recycled content, and extended producer responsibility.
In parallel, Regulation (EU) 2025/351 has significantly revised the safety requirements for plastic food contact materials, with new restrictions and specific rules on substances of high concern. Of particular relevance is the ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact applications and the ongoing scientific re-evaluation of the entire bisphenol group, which is already pushing the industry toward alternative substances and formulations.
